Info on background checks for organizations
The Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale, in collaboration with the Ministère de la Sécurité publique and Fédération des centres d’action bénévole du Québec (FCABQ), supports a program to cover the costs of criminal background checks for volunteers working with community organizations and voluntary associations. However, please note that sports and recreation organizations and charities established as foundations are unfortunately not included in this measure. To find out more, we invite you to refer to your attached ministry.
More specifically, this free background check program is intended for volunteers who work with a clientele said to be at risk of experiencing abuse by others, whether because of their physical and/or mental condition, or other temporary or permanent circumstances. As a result, not all volunteer positions are eligible for this coverage.
In line with the strategic planning of your organization, we suggest that you renew the background checks of your volunteers every three to five years. In addition, you can implement, if you have not already done so, the Ten Steps of Screening promoted by Volunteer Canada, which include background checks and more. If you would like to obtain documentation or have any questions on this subject, we invite you to contact your local Volunteer Centre, which will be able to advise. To find the Volunteer Centre closest to you, click on this link (French only): www.FCABQ.org/centres-d-action-benevole/liste-des-centres.
To check the eligibility of your organization for the program, we invite you to create a Jebenevole.ca account.
